Popular questions
Account and sign-in
Sign-in codes, creating an account, and your details.
- Check your spam or junk folder.
- A code works for 15 minutes. Asking again within that time sends the same code, so use the newest email. Wait a minute between requests.
- Try signing in on a computer at kanu.us/students/login (opens in a new tab).
- "Forgot password?" sends you a reset link, not a code.
If codes still never arrive, your email may have been typed wrong when you signed up. Contact us and tell us the email you signed up with.
This means we haven't confirmed your email address yet. On the sign-in screen, choose One-Time Code. We'll email you a code, and entering it verifies your account and signs you in. If the code doesn't arrive, see I'm not getting my sign-in code.
Check these three things:
- You typed your email correctly.
- If you picked your school, use your school email. Some schools only accept their own addresses.
- If it says you already have an account with that email, sign in instead, using a one-time code.
Still stuck? Contact us and tell us the email you used.
Some schools ask you to sign up with your school email so your teacher can see you in the class. If your school does, you'll be asked for it when you pick your school. We confirm the address by emailing you a one-time code.
Your KANU account isn't deleted. But we sign you in by emailing a code to that address, so if your school email stops working, you won't get the code. We can't move an account to a different email, so keep access to your school email for as long as you need KANU.
Sign in on the website and go to kanu.us/account/delete (opens in a new tab). You'll need to enter your password. Deleting your account works on the website only, not in the app.
If you joined with a link or a code and never set a password, set one first: use the "Set a password" card in the left menu, or open Your Account from your profile menu and choose "Set a password". If you've forgotten it, use "Forgot password?" on the sign-in screen.
We use your information to run your account and your class, keep KANU safe, prevent fraud, and meet our legal obligations. KANU does not sell student data.
The full details are in our Privacy Policy and on our Trust & Security page.
Joining your class
Invite links, class codes, and paying for a class.
Your teacher will give you one of three things:
- A join link or QR code: open it and follow the steps.
- A class code: go to kanu.us/student/join-code (opens in a new tab) (or choose "Join an experience" in the left menu on kanu.us) and enter it.
- A bookstore access code: go to kanu.us/student/redeem (opens in a new tab) and enter it.
Once you've joined, the class appears under My Experiences in the left menu.
Open the link on any device and follow the steps there. You don't need the app. If it says the link has expired, ask your teacher for a new one. If it says your email doesn't match, sign up with your school email.
Join on the website first. Open your teacher's invite link on a computer and finish joining at kanu.us. Then sign in to the app with the same email, and your class will be there.
If you were charged in the app, see I was charged in the app.
If your class doesn't show under My Experiences, you haven't finished joining. Open your teacher's link or enter the class code again (see How do I join my class?). Make sure you're signed in with the same email you used to join.
Enter your code at kanu.us/student/redeem (opens in a new tab), and check for typos first. The message you see tells you what's wrong:
- Expired, or reached its limit: contact your bookstore or teacher.
- Already redeemed: you've used it already, so sign in and look under My Experiences.
- Email isn't associated with the university: sign up with your school email.
Still stuck? Email support@kanu.us with your code.
Many schools pay for their students, so you won't be charged. If yours doesn't, you'll see a one-time checkout for the semester when you join. A small payment processing fee is included in the total shown there.
The semester plan doesn't renew automatically. If you take another KANU class later, you'll join that one separately.
Modules, to-dos and badges
Finding your work, getting unstuck, and earning badges.
Sign in at kanu.us and open your class from My Experiences in the left menu. Your modules are on the Voyage tab. If the class isn't there, see My class isn't showing up.
Open your class and go to the To-do list. On the website it has Due this week, Overdue and Badges tabs; in the app, the To-do tab has Up next, Overdue and Badges.
We'll also remind you by email and, if you use the app, with a notification. Your teacher sets the due dates, so check with them if something looks wrong.
In the module, tap the Help button (the lifebuoy icon) at the top, then "Stuck? Refresh Module". This restarts that module.
If it's still broken, choose "Report an Issue" in the same menu and tell us which module it is and what happened.
Open your class, go to the To-do list and choose Badges. Tap a badge to see its goal and how close you are. Earned badges show the date you got them. If you see no badges at all, you may not have joined the class yet (see How do I join my class?).
Badges are checked automatically against their goal. Tap the badge in your To-do list to see what's still missing. The most common reasons:
- A product sale counts once the buyer has paid. A booking counts once you mark the work complete.
- It has to happen while your class is running.
- A setup badge needs every setup step of your link finished, not just publishing.
- Cash sales can't count, because we can't verify them. Have customers pay through your link. They don't need an account.
If a sale still isn't counted after a day, contact us with the order details.
Your link joins your class when you finish the module step where you choose your business. To pick a different one, go back to that module, tap Help, then "Stuck? Refresh Module", and choose again. If you can't find it, ask your teacher or contact us.
Yes. In the module, tap Help, then "Stuck? Refresh Module", to go through it again.
Your teacher keeps your Skill Check score from the first time you completed it. Your typed answers are replaced by the new ones, and work you submitted in that module, like a reflection, is cleared until you submit it again.
XP (experience points) track your progress. You earn XP for finishing modules, answering Skill Check questions correctly and earning badges. Your XP sets your place on the class Leaderboard (the Rank tab in the app).
Your teacher sees which modules you've finished and when, your Skill Check scores (not which answers you picked), your written reflections, the badges you've earned, and your XP.
If your class has industry reviewers, they also see the answers you type in your modules.
Classmates can see your name, your venture and your XP on the class Leaderboard.
Thanks for catching it. Take a screenshot of the question and send it to us with Report an issue (opens in a new tab) or at support@kanu.us. We'll check it and fix it.
Your storefront
Creating, publishing, editing and sharing your link.
There are three. A ShopLink sells products, a BookLink takes bookings for a service, and a PitchLink presents an idea or venture. Every KANU account can create them; you don't need a separate seller account.
To start, choose Create in the left menu on kanu.us, then Product (ShopLink), Service (BookLink) or Idea (PitchLink). Some schools turn off types they don't use, so you may not see all three.
No. Creating a ShopLink, BookLink or PitchLink is free. When you make a sale, a payment processing fee comes out of that sale (see Why is my payout less than my sales?).
Every link needs a logo, a name and a description. Then, by type:
- PitchLink: at least one item with a photo.
- ShopLink: a payment method, a shipping method, and at least one product. Every product needs a photo, a category and a price above $0. If you're not ready to sell yet, set a product's stock to 0.
- BookLink: a payment method, at least one service with a photo, and a schedule for your service.
ShopLinks and BookLinks also need a location. You don't need a teammate to publish.
Sign in at kanu.us, open your link from the left menu, and go to Storefront. The Editor sits beside your storefront; use "Expand editor" to open it. It lists every setup step and shows which ones are finished. You can change your name, description, photos and items any time.
No. A link's type can't be changed after you create it. If you need the other kind, create a new link. To sell products and offer a service, create a ShopLink and a BookLink.
Yes. Anyone can buy from or book your link without making a KANU account. At checkout they enter their name, email and phone number.
If you set your link to school only, it won't show in browse or search for people without a school account, but anyone you send the link to can still open it and buy.
First check that your link is published. Then share it directly: most customers arrive from a link you send them, not from search. Shoppers can sort search results by Popularity, price, Latest or rating, so good reviews and sales help you show up higher.
A link has two kinds of teammate. An Admin can do everything: edit the link, manage the team, and delete it. A Member can manage products and photos and switch availability on or off, but can't change the link's details or the team.
Every link gets free analytics: sales and revenue, fees and your expected payout, views and visits, how many visitors buy, reviews, stock, supporters and top sellers. You can also download your orders as a spreadsheet. Find them under your link's Analytics.
Most student businesses on KANU don't need a license, but some kinds of work are regulated where you live (for example food, beauty services, financial advice or trades). Check your local rules and ask your teacher if you're unsure.
Orders, reviews and paying
For buyers and sellers: confirming, reviewing, and order status.
Open the link in the email we sent about your order. You don't need a KANU account; if you have one, you'll be asked to sign in first. Confirm that you got your order, then pick 1 to 5 stars and add a comment if you like.
Confirming completes the order so the seller can be paid. If something is wrong, message the seller or contact us before you confirm.
When the seller marks your order delivered (or your service done), we ask you to confirm. Once you confirm, the order is complete. If you don't respond, it completes on its own after 5 days, so let us know quickly if something is wrong.
Open the order from your link's Orders (Bookings for a BookLink) in the left menu on kanu.us, or from Orders in the app.
- Product orders are accepted automatically once the buyer pays (unless you turned that off, in which case tap Accept). When the buyer has it, tap "Complete delivery" on the website or "Mark as delivered" in the app.
- Bookings: tap "Start work" when you begin, then "Complete work" on the website or "Mark work complete" in the app when you finish.
Either way, the buyer is then asked to confirm. Only mark an order finished when the work is really done.
On the website:
- Products: Ordered (waiting for the seller), Accepted (the seller is preparing it), Delivered (the seller says you have it, so please confirm), Completed.
- Bookings: Pending Approval (waiting for the seller), Accepted and Waiting for Payment (pay to confirm), Paid to KANU, In progress, Completed (the seller finished), Done (you confirmed).
- Cancelled, Declined and Expired mean the order didn't go ahead. Refunded means we returned your payment.
In the app, each order says whose move it is: Waiting for seller, Your turn, Waiting for buyer, or Complete.
On the website, open your profile menu and choose Your Orders (kanu.us/requests (opens in a new tab)). Use History there for past orders.
In the app, current orders are under Inbox, then Orders. Past orders are under Profile, then Order history.
On the website, open the order and tap "Message Provider" (for a booking, tap Chat), or go to kanu.us/chat (opens in a new tab). In the app, open the order and tap "Message seller".
A conversation stays in your list until a day after the order is complete.
An order leaves your active list when it's completed, cancelled, declined, or expired because it wasn't paid in time. Check your past orders to see which. If you paid and the order was then cancelled, contact us and we'll sort out your refund.
Debit or credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal or Venmo. You don't need a PayPal account to pay by card. If a card is declined, check the card details and billing ZIP code, or try another method.
Saved payment methods appear at checkout, where you can add or remove them.
No. You pay the price, any delivery fee, and sales tax where it applies. KANU doesn't add a service fee. (Paying for a class is different: see Do I have to pay to join my class?)
The seller's link may not be published yet or may have been closed. A product may be sold out, or the seller may have switched it off for now. Some links are set to school only, so they don't show in browse or search unless you're signed in with a school account.
If the seller gave you their link, open it from there. A direct link always works.
Getting paid
For sellers: payout methods, timing, fees and taxes.
Add it in the Payment Method step when you create or edit your link. You can choose a bank account, PayPal or Venmo (Venmo needs a US phone number). For a bank account, enter your own address, not your bank's.
If it won't save, check the details exactly match your bank, PayPal or Venmo account, then contact us.
A product sale counts toward your payout once the order is complete. A booking counts once you mark the work complete.
Payouts go out once a week, on Thursday, through our payout partner, Trolley, to your bank account, PayPal or Venmo. Allow 1 to 2 business days for the money to arrive.
Buyers pay no fee, and KANU takes nothing from your sales. Two fees come out of your earnings:
- A payment processing fee on each sale: 2.59% + $0.49 when the buyer pays by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, or 3.49% + $0.49 for PayPal or Venmo.
- A payout fee once a week, not per sale: $1.00 to a bank account, or $1.50 to PayPal or Venmo. It's charged for each link that gets paid, so two links paid in the same week means two payout fees.
On a $10 card sale you keep about $9.25 before the weekly payout fee. Your link's Analytics shows your fees and expected payout.
Yes, $5. Each link is paid once its balance reaches $5. A smaller balance isn't lost: it rolls over to the next week and is paid once it reaches $5.
No. Earnings are paid out once a week, on Thursday, so we can't send them early.
Money you earn on KANU can count as income. Whether you need to file depends on how much you earn and where you live. Ask a parent, guardian or tax professional.
Refunds and cancellations
Cancelling, getting your money back, and refunding a customer.
- Bookings, before you pay: cancel any time, for free. Product orders can't be cancelled by the buyer; message the seller (see How do I cancel an order or booking?).
- After you pay: message the seller first. If they agree, KANU refunds the full amount to your original payment method.
- If the seller doesn't reply within 3 days, your item never arrived, or the work wasn't done: contact us and KANU will decide.
There are no late-cancellation or no-show fees.
- Bookings: you can cancel one yourself until you've paid. On the website, open the booking and tap "Cancel Request" (shown while it says Accepted and Waiting for Payment). In the app, open it and tap "Cancel request".
- Product orders: you can't cancel one yourself, even before the seller accepts it. Message the seller and ask.
Once you've paid, if the seller agrees, KANU refunds you the full amount. If they don't reply within 3 days, contact us and we'll decide.
Message the seller first. If they agree to a refund, KANU refunds you the full amount to your original payment method.
If they don't reply within 3 days, tell us from the order: on the website, tap "I haven't received it", then "Send to KANU"; in the app, tap "Report a problem". You can also contact us. We'll decide.
We refund the full amount to your original payment method. Card refunds can take 5 to 10 business days to show up on your statement.
For a product order, open it and tap "Ask KANU to refund your customer" on the website, or "Get help with this order" in the app (shown until you mark it delivered). For a booking, use "Get help with this booking" in the app or contact us.
If you'd already been paid for a product order that's refunded, the amount comes out of your next payout. If there's no later payout, KANU covers it.
If the charge came from the App Store (it's on your Apple receipt), Apple handles the refund. Request it at reportaproblem.apple.com (opens in a new tab).
For any other charge, contact us with the date and amount. To join a class, use your teacher's invite link on the website (see How do I join my class?).
