Executive Summary

From Passive Learning to Real Venture Ownership

Start-Up Academy set out to move entrepreneurship education beyond inspiration and into lived practice. By adopting KANU and launching Coffee Voyage, the program enabled students to create, customize, and run a real coffee venture with student-led storefronts and transactions—driving measurable outcomes and a 100% completion rate.

The Gap

Students listened and learned but lacked a structured path to create a company, sell a product, or test if entrepreneurship fit them.

The Solution

KANU enabled student-led storefronts and transactions without requiring staff to manage commerce logistics.

The Impact

A measurable shift from exposure to hands-on venture experience — driving sales, donations, seed funding, and 100% completion.

What's Next

Expanding the model with a storefront-enabled downtown presence and in-person operations.

The Challenge

What Was at Stake

Start-Up Academy provided meaningful exposure to entrepreneurship by connecting students with community entrepreneurs. But the experience was largely passive: students listened, learned, and observed without a structured path to create a company, sell a product, or test whether entrepreneurship fit them personally.

Compounding the challenge was an institutional barrier—there was no accessible e-commerce platform or point-of-sale system to support small, student-run businesses.

Without Infrastructure

True venture ownership remained out of reach, limiting students to passive learning rather than hands-on commerce experience.

Passive Learning

Students listened and observed but couldn't build or sell a real product

No Ownership Path

No structured way to test if entrepreneurship fit them personally

Infrastructure Gap

No accessible e-commerce or point-of-sale system for student ventures

Limited Testing

Students couldn't validate ideas or learn from real customer interactions

The Solution

Coffee Voyage: A Real Student-Run Venture

The program adopted KANU to deliver a structured, student-led startup experience through Coffee Voyage. KANU stood out for its service-oriented partnership, ease of implementation, and mobile-first experience that lowered barriers to participation—enabling storefronts and transactions without requiring staff to manage commerce logistics.

Student-Led Storefronts

Students created, customized, and managed their own storefronts with inventory, pricing, and promotions—all from their phones

Real Commerce Experience

Students handled transactions, customer interactions, and fulfillment—building confidence and practical business skills

Low Friction, High Ownership

KANU's mobile-first design eliminated technical barriers, making it easy for students to participate and manage their venture

Before KANU… I wanted students to go beyond listening and actually participate in building a real company and selling products.

We also appreciated that students can manage everything directly from their phones… which significantly lowers barriers to participation.

I used to hate entrepreneurship, but now? It has made me open to the idea of starting my own business.

Replicate the Success

The Repeatable Playbook for Student Venture Ownership

Start-Up Academy made venture ownership doable by simplifying the model. Here's how you can implement this same approach at your institution.

01

Anchor in a Real Venture

Move beyond guest talks and exposure. Create a real venture like Coffee Voyage where students build, sell, and own the entire process.

02

Enable Student-Run Commerce

Use KANU for storefront + transactions so students can sell without staff running commerce logistics. This unlocks ownership while preserving capacity.

03

Keep It Mobile-First

Students manage work and storefront updates directly from their phones with low friction, significantly lowering barriers to participation.

04

Lean on Built-In Coursework

Use structured coursework instead of creating extra reflection or out-of-class assignments. Keep the experience focused and manageable.

05

Track Proof Points

Go beyond participation metrics. Track completion rate, sales, donations, seed funding, and confidence gains to measure real impact.
